Description
A fascinating, unique experience
One of the highlights of your stay in Greece is a visit to the Meteora monasteries. The meteors are a group of tall, steep rocks that are 300 meters above the valley. There are monasteries on the mountain peaks. Their grottos have served the Orthodox monks as hermit hermitages since the 11th century. Today only 24 of the total of 6 monasteries are still inhabited.
Via Thessaloniki you drive along the coast, past Mount Olympus, through the beautiful valley of Tempi to Larissa. From there it goes inland. You will soon see how the Meteora rocks protrude from the plain around Trikala like large mushrooms.
The drive takes you through Kalambaka up to the rocks, where you visit the monasteries of Saint Stephen and Saint Barbara Roussano.
Byzantine architecture and an incomparable landscape await you.
