Important churches and imposing palaces

With 19.000 inhabitants, the old island capital and today's bishopric is the second largest city on the island. In 1722 the seat of government was moved to Mahón by the English. But even in the years that followed, the local nobility continued to regard it as the capital.

In contrast to Mahón, Ciutadella has much more important buildings, such as noble palaces and the cathedral. In addition to the Gothic cathedral with the adjoining bishop's palace, the churches of San Francis and Nuestra Señora del Rosario as well as the palaces of Martorell and De Saura are worth seeing.

The Place des Born is characterized by other impressive buildings. Here you will find, among other things, the town hall with a small museum and the palaces of Conde Torre Saura and Del Casa Salord. In the middle of the square, an obelisk commemorates the city's defense in 1558 against Turkish pirates.

About four kilometers before Ciutadella, on the main road towards Mahón, it is worth visiting one of the prehistoric buildings on the island, the Naveta de's Tudons.
