Description
Surely one of your most beautiful vacation experiences
The monastic republic of Athos is located on the third and easternmost finger of the Chalkidiki peninsula. The first hermits came around 300 AD. Most of them lived alone in caves and dedicated their lives to God. Little by little the whole mountain was populated. The first monastery was founded in the 9th century.
In the 13th century, the heyday of the republic, there were 40 monasteries, which were inhabited by about 40.000 monks. Today there are around 1.500, spread over around 20 monasteries, which still live under the same strict rules as they did then. Without a doubt, Athos is now the “largest Byzantine museum” in the world.
The excursion bus takes you to Ormos Panagias to the ship. Here you set sail. The journey takes you along the west coast of the monastic republic of Athos. Enjoy an incomparable view of the various monasteries, some of which stick to the steep rock walls like swallow nests.
The Russian Orthodox Panteileimonos monastery, which spreads out like a village on the shallow beach, offers a nice motif for your film cameras.
After a stay in Ouranopolis - the border to the republic - you will return to your hotel in the afternoon.
