Description
Experience and explore southern Tunisia
Day 1
Visit El Djem, the third largest Roman amphitheater in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was also used as a backdrop for the film "Gladiator". In Matmata you will reach a lunar landscape, which became known as the location of several scenes for the movie "Star Wars". Here people live in archaic cave dwellings, one of which you can visit.
You will also have your lunch here. Your day ends at the gateway to the sandy desert in a mid-range hotel in the oasis of Douz. Enjoy a dromedary ride (optional, payable locally) over the dunes of the Sahara during sunset.
Day 2
After breakfast you cross the salt lake Chott El Jerid - the largest salt desert in Africa, through which Karl May led his legendary adventure heroes. The sun's rays on the salt crystals create fascinating mirages. The oasis of Tozeur is known for its 14th-century adobe architecture. You drive to the picturesque mountain oases of Chebika and Tamerza in an off-road vehicle: the interplay of the intensive colors of the palm trees, mountains and water results in dreamy motifs that you can capture with your camera from a vantage point. On this excursion day, you have the option to drive to the Star Wars Ong Jmal film set (optional, payable locally) or stroll through Tozeur town center at your leisure. On the way back, stop in the holy city of Kairouan, whose old town has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1988.
