Security measures for civil aviation

Since November 6, 2006, a new regulation of the European Commission on the safety of civil air traffic has been in force. This regulation limits the amount of liquid that passengers are allowed to take with them in hand luggage through the security checkpoints.

This regulation applies to all departures from airports within the European Community and since March 1, 2009 also in Turkey.

There are two restrictions on the amount of liquids in hand luggage:

  • Passengers are only allowed to take liquids with them in containers with a maximum capacity of 100 ml.
  • All liquid containers must be presented in a plastic bag (maximum capacity: 1L) at security checkpoints. This must be transparent and lockable. Airports are not obliged to provide plastic bags for passengers! Examples of liquids are drinks, gels, lotions, creams, toothpaste and shaving cream.

Exceptions apply in the following cases:

  • Baby food, milk or juices for babies and toddlers traveling with you may be carried.
  • Personally prescribed medication and medication required during the flight, such as insulin, may be carried. It requires a medical certificate confirming that the passenger needs this medication.

Liquids purchased at the airport behind the security checkpoints may be carried in the passenger's hand luggage.

Please note: In the case of stopovers or change of aircraft (turnstile flights) you have to go through the hand baggage control again, ie you have to observe the rules listed again. This means that you can now only carry liquids (perfume, beverage bottles, etc.) purchased in the duty-free shop in a transparent plastic bag and only up to 100 ml each, as otherwise customs will withhold the purchased liquids.

In addition, passengers are obliged to take off their coats, jackets, blazers or jackets during the security check and to take large electronic devices such as notebooks out of their pockets.

The already known provisions on prohibited items in luggage and hand luggage remain valid.

Please also note possible current changes for air travelers.
