In the Timanfaya National Park

The Timanfaya National Park extends over an area of 51,07 square kilometers in the southwest of the island. It is one of the seven national parks in Spain and stretches from the local border of Yaiza to the Montaña Timanfaya. The coastline forms the western border.

In the 18th century, 32 volcanic cones were created here by volcanic eruptions. These eruptions were the most significant in the history of volcanism because of the enormous amount of expelled material and the long duration. There were also numerous seaquakes. The volcanoes of Timanfaya National Park belong to the so-called Hawaii group. At great heights, they form huge ash columns, the lapilli, which, when carried by the wind, cover wide areas and slopes of old craters. These areas formed by the ash rain are called the Valle de la Tranquilidad (Valley of Tranquility). The center of these eruptions was on the Maciso del Fuego (Fire Massif), which rises 525 m high. The imposing cinder cone Caldera del Corazoncillo has a crater, the depth of which extends about 100 m below the surface of the area. The lava from this volcano buried the village of Timanfaya in 1730.

A dromedary ride on the 512 m high Timanfaya volcano is fun for young and old.

Further up in the volcanic area is the Islote de Hilario with the El Diablo restaurant, which was built by the island artist César Manrique. This restaurant serves meat fried by the volcanic heat. Various experiments show the viewer how hot it is a few meters below the surface. Since you cannot drive into the crater area with the rental car for safety reasons, bus tours are offered. They offer the opportunity to observe the wonderful and fascinating, approx. 260 hectare natural wonder up close.

Don't miss a visit to the Timanfaya Visitor Center. Here you get a lot of information about volcanism, including an audio-video show.

Because the entire volcanic area is under nature protection, we ask you never to deviate from the main road!
