An overview of typical island delicacies

Mallorcan cuisine is characterized by a long tradition, exquisite flavors and imaginative combinations.

The most popular creation of the Balearic Islands is certainly the mayonnaise, the name of which is derived from "Mahón" and which - originated in Menorca - has conquered the whole world.

You should definitely try the often hearty dishes such as "Frito Mallorquin" (offal with vegetables), "Sopas Mallorquinas" (casserole with mutton, chicken, bread and vegetables) or "Lomo con Col" (pork fillet with cabbage). Also recommended are the "tapas" - delicious little things that are served in bars or bodegas. In the holiday resorts and hotels, the meal times are adapted to Central European customs. Locals rarely eat before 21pm in the evening.

In Mallorca, the most popular dishes are soups that are prepared with fish, meat or pasta. After the soups, pork is usually served, called "porcella". Numerous dishes are prepared from it, such as roast or Rosti. The roast is often filled with a tasty mix of pork liver, eggs, bread, apples, plums and spices.

The most famous sausage in the Balearic Islands, the "sobrasada", is also made from pork. The “Soller Style” eggs are also worth mentioning. These are fried eggs on "sobrasada", which are covered with a sauce made from vegetables and milk.

An outstanding vegetable dish is “el tumbet”. To do this, a layer of pre-fried eggplant is placed on a layer of potatoes, covered with tomato sauce and peppers and cooked in the oven. Eggplants are also often baked in the oven with fish or meat.

The Mallorcans prefer hearty dishes with a sweet aftertaste, e.g. stuffed chicken with pomegranate sauce, turkey with almond sauce and young pigeons with chestnuts.

Among the desserts and confectionery products, the “ensaimada” takes first place - a delicious yeast pastry.
