The island's tourist and cultural life is concentrated in the capital. Not only the location of Kos town, framed by the sea and the gently rising wooded slopes, makes Kos so attractive, but also the architecture of the city. It is shaped by the different periods of occupation to which the island was subject over the centuries.

So it is almost impossible to take a step in Kos without encountering ancient ruins.

The plane tree of Hippocrates, probably the most important son of the island, is one of the most important sights of the city. Under their shadow, it is said, the famous doctor had already taught his students in antiquity. From here, a stone bridge leads to the “Neratzia” castle, from whose walls you have a panoramic view of the entire port.

The largest archaeological site in the city, the “Ancient Agora” is right next to “Eleftherias Square” in the center of the city. There you can watch the hustle and bustle in the city in one of the many cafés or you can stroll further into the old town.

Here shop after shop, from jewelry to handicrafts to Greek olive oil, a wide range of goods is offered.

At the end of the old town are the western excavations with the Nymphaion and the remains of a portico, the “Gymnasion”.

Other sights are the Archaeological Museum and the “Casa Romana”, the remains of a Roman villa.
