Many people of Turkish origin still live in this small village, only 3km outside of Kos town. Accordingly, there is not only a Christian church, but also a mosque in the village. The local restaurants and taverns, which offer a mixture of Greek and Turkish cuisine, are particularly popular.

Just outside of Platani is the most important archaeological site on the island, the “Askleipion”. This is the first sanatorium in which the teachings of Hippocrates, the first physician of antiquity, were applied.

It was dedicated to the god of healing “Aeskulap”.

The Askleipion is surrounded by wooded slopes above Kos town and offers a delightful view over the plain.
