Harbor, Hippocrates & History

The capital of the island is located on the northeast tip, in the middle of an extensive bay. An interesting sightseeing point is certainly the plane tree of Hippocrates. This tree is probably the oldest in Europe and Hippocrates is said to have taught his students under it. Then you can visit the Johanniter fortress, which was built in the 15th century. From its walls you have a good view of the berths for speedboats and ferries, of the town's old fishing port and of the mountainous surroundings.

A walk along the harbor is always interesting, but especially when the fishermen come back with their boats after a successful tour. The fishermen will certainly not mind if you admire their prey.

Those interested in mythology and history shouldn't miss a visit to the museum. Also worth seeing are the Casa Romana, which offers you a lively insight into Roman times, and the well-preserved Odeum, the ancient theater dates from the 2nd century and was once covered.

Or stroll to Eleftherias Square, which is located in the center of Kos town, and let yourself be enchanted by the hustle and bustle in the market hall.

However, if you are drawn to the beach, you will find beautiful sandy beaches just outside the city, for example in Tigaki or Marmari. You can reach these popular destinations by bus, taxi, motorbike, motorcycle or rental car.

But the night owls among you won't be neglected either. In Kos Town there is a large selection of bars, discos, taverns, restaurants and bouzuki bars.
