UNESCO in Menorca

The term biosphere reserve was created as part of the MASS-UNESCO project.

It designates an area in which one finds different ecosystems typical of a certain biogeographical zone. The region continues to develop economically through the sensible use of resources without neglecting the protection and preservation of the environment. Therein lies the fundamental difference to a nature park or nature reserve.

On October 7, 1993, the island was declared a "biosphere reserve" by the international committee of the MASS project of UNESCO. This declaration is an acknowledgment of the unique natural resources and living conditions of Menorca.

Concrete measures are being taken in Menorca to strike a balance between:

  • Beautification of tourist centers
  • Waste prevention and recycling
  • Rehabilitation of habitats and improvement of the road network with respect for the environment
  • Restoration and preservation of important archaeological evidence and sites
  • Restoration of the typical landscape features and repair of the dry stone walls
  • Promotion of the jewelery and shoe industry, while minimizing the impact on the environment
  • Designation of origin of rural handicrafts

These measures include, for example, protecting the designation of origin of Mahón cheese as “Queso mahónes”.
