A city with a long history

The small town of Zarzis is only 50 km from the island of Djerba, in the middle of a sea oasis. In the desolate and desolate steppe, the place was able to defy the influence of the Sahara thanks to its location and the tireless efforts of the population.

From a geographical point of view, the peninsula consists of an elongated, flat coastal strip, a plateau with olive groves as well as a few vines and numerous small towns.

Zarzis is said to have been founded at the time of the Numiden epoch - 6th to 2nd century BC - and was a Phoenician trading post. Numerous remains confirm the ancient heyday.

About 10 km west of Zarzis are ruins of the ancient city of Ziane. Called Zita Nunicipum by ancient travelers, it was one of the most important cities in this region. In Roman times, fields and cisterns were to be found everywhere along the coast to the border.

After the Tunisian cities of Sfax and Mahdia, Zarzis has the largest fishing port in the south. The “Zone Touristique”, the hotel zone, begins about 3 km north of Zarzis.

Visit the center or the suburbs for a leisurely stroll through the weekly markets and for a relaxed stroll.

It's worth it!
