From barren sand dunes to fertile oases

On the north and east coast there are many subtropical plants such as hibiscus, bougainvillea, jasmine, oleander, citrus fruits, olive trees and grapevines.

When cultivated, pomegranates, figs, peaches and apricots also thrive - fruits that require a lot of work but are not very productive.

In the northern Kroumir mountains there are cork and holm oak forests. Wild boars and red foxes live there. In the zone to the east, due to the centuries of overexploitation, only macchia plants such as ferns, heather and gorse can be found. The once large forest areas in Tunisia were largely cut down in ancient times, so that only remnants can now be found. To counteract this, the government has started reforestation projects.
