Djerba's environment

seagrass
Seaweed or seaweed play a major role in the ecological balance of the sea. It is a natural protection for the coast because it prevents erosion and thus the destruction of the beach.

Seagrass also grows on the gently sloping coasts of Djerba, and depending on the weather and the season, it is washed ashore to a greater or lesser extent on the beach. There are often small, oval or round balls in the seagrass. These are the tips of the ears of seaweed, which are shaped by the constant movement of the sea.

The sea has been rising for years and the beach is threateningly narrow in some places. From an ecological point of view, only the sea is allowed to bring the seaweed back into the water and does this with the help of the tides. This preserves the sandy beach. We must not fight nature by disposing of the seaweed. At most we can bury it. The sea and the beach are ecosystems that need to be preserved.

You can be sure that your hotel will do everything possible to make bathing in the sea as easy as possible for you, despite intermittent deposits of seaweed. Show understanding for nature and sometimes ignore it when you run into the water through seaweed. Nature will thank you!

Thermal springs
The tourist origin of Djerba and Zarzis goes back to its thermal springs. On the beach of some hotels, a small trickle runs down to the sea. These are overpressure pipes of the thermal pools or their pumping stations. The water is brownish in color, lukewarm, contains sulfur and iron and is very healthy for bones, skin, muscles and the metabolism.
