The small picturesque fishing village is one of the oldest places in the Algarve. Historians suspect that Hannibal found the original settlement "Portus Hannibalis" here in 182 BC. Founded. Little more is known of its history than that the place was attacked and sacked by crusaders in 1189. Alvor itself is still a sleepy fishing village today - in stark contrast to the nearby holiday resort of Alvor-Torralta. The parish church offers a beautiful view of the village, the Arade river and the sea.
