Roman fortress with bird paradise

The old, originally Roman fortress of Castro Marim rises in the middle of salt pans and the marshland of the Rio Guadiana. The unique natural park of Sapal de Castro Marim extends south of the fortress to Vila Real.

The marshes and salt lakes of the Guadiana lowlands have become home to many rare birds. A visit to this unique area is definitely worthwhile - and not only for ornithologists.

An insider tip is the Castro Marim market, which takes place every 2nd Saturday of the month - very typical of the country!
