A brief overview of the country and its people

The Republic of Tunisia has around 12 million inhabitants, 95% of whom are Arabs or Arabized Berbers. But there is also a minority of Europeans and a small Jewish community.

The Berbers are the indigenous people of North Africa, they were here long before the Arabs, Europeans and Romans.

However, if you drive through the interior of the country or visit a traditional weekly market, the Berber women in particular stand out with their traditional clothing, as well as their colored hair and facial tattoos. When it comes to clothing, predominantly red and blue tones, and also burgundy red, are worn.

The Berber women are also hung with plenty of jewelry, as traditionally most of their property is in silver. The ladies wear very beautiful necklaces, amulets, earrings, bracelets and anklets. The silver fibulae, which are used to hold the outerwear together, are also very striking.

The Arabs came to Tunisia in the 7th century and brought the religion of their prophet Mohamed with them. Most of the current population lives in the cities along the coast and in the green and fertile north of the country.

To the south and inland, the population is getting thinner and thinner, only to cease completely in the Sahara. Due to Tunisia's close ties to Europe and tourism, as well as the mass media and the experience of many Tunisians abroad, parts of society are in a state of upheaval. In the cities, the extended family is no longer modern, many married couples only want a maximum of 2 children. Thus Tunisia has the lowest birth rate in Africa.
