The flora and fauna of Tunisia

In accordance with the climate, the vegetation in Tunisia is partly Mediterranean and partly shaped by the Sahara desert.

In the north you can find trees, south of it low bushes and in the steppe only dry-resistant grasses such as acacias.

In the far south of the country you can only see agaves, thorn bushes and cacti.

Many of the cork oak forests in the north have been cut down, and increasing groundwater shortages and erosion are contributing to the expansion of the desert.

A major reforestation program began: since Tunisia's independence, many fast-growing trees have been replanted. There is even an annual festival of the tree.
